As early as 1993, a study mentioned in the New York Times highlighted a group of individuals gathering in Washington to practice meditation with the goal of reducing crime rates (State News Service, 1993). By the end of the study, the results were clear: Meditation has a profound effect on individuals and can positively influence the world around us. The power of meditation extends beyond personal transformation, creating a ripple effect that touches the earth and all living beings.
Over the years, meditation has evolved in many ways. Depending on who you ask, meditation can be defined in various forms, each with its unique practices and purposes. One such practice is Kundalini Yoga, an ancient and scientifically grounded system that has been in use for centuries. Kundalini Yoga integrates meditation as a key component, incorporating various elements like Mantra (Sant Bhasha), Mudra (hand positions), pressure points, different focal points and breathwork into the practice. These components work together to enhance our experience and deepen our awareness.
How Kundalini Meditation Works
Meditation in Kundalini Yoga is typically practiced in intervals starting at 3 minutes and regular practice (and increasing the time you practice) can bring noticeable changes to your state of awareness. The most profound results are often seen after 40 days of consistent practice. Through various meditative practices, including specific mantras, hand positions, and pressure points, we stimulate energy flow along the body’s meridians, much like acupuncture. This flow of energy is said to help "rewire" the brain, shifting our consciousness and enabling us to reach new states of awareness and mental clarity.
Practice Timing
3 minutes: Affects your circulation, blood chemistry and stability of the blood. The increased blood circulations begins, distributing enhanced neuroendocrine secretions throughout the body.
7 minutes: Brain patterns start to shift from the static of beta waves, to calmer alpha waves and ultimately to deep relaxing delta waves. Simultaneously, the magnetic force surrounding the body increases in strength.
11 minutes: The pituitary gland, glandular system and the nerves start to learn and change. The sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems begin to accommodate the increased energy.
22 minutes: Anxiety producing thoughts in the subconscious begin to clear. Your three minds (negative, positive, and neutral) start to work together so your mental integration changes. 22 is the infinite number of longing and gives mastery of the mental realm.
31 minutes: Affects your whole mind and your aura. Endocrinological balance is achieved, as is balance of the chakra’s of the ethereal body. This balance persists throughout the day, and is reflected by changes in moods and behavior.
One powerful practice we will focus on this month is Kirtan Kriya. This meditation is specifically designed to enhance brain function and mental health. While we could easily spend months exploring all of its benefits, I'll provide an introduction to get you started and perhaps inspire you to incorporate this practice into your daily routine. You can read more about Kirtan Kriya through this link: Kirtan Kriya - The Divine Song.
Amount of Days
11 days: This is the first step to break loose from unwanted thoughts.
40 days: Helps to break negative habits that block you from the expansion possible, if done 40 days straight in a row.
90 days: When you practice the meditation for 90 days straight it will establish a new habit in your conscious and subconscious mind. It will change you in a very deep way.
120 days: When you commit to practice the meditation for 120 days without skipping a day it will confirm the new habit of consciousness.
1000 days: This will allow you to master the new habit of consciousness that the meditation has promised. No matter what the challenge, you can call on this new habit to serve you.
The Science Behind Meditation
So how exactly does meditation work? In essence, it’s about creating vibrations that help activate pressure points in the body. Similar to acupuncture, these pressure points stimulate energy flow along the meridians, guiding this energy to the brain and beyond. By consistently practicing meditation, we help rewire the brain, improving mental health and cultivating a heightened sense of consciousness.
As we meditate, we shift our brainwaves, engage the parasympathetic nervous system, and reduce stress. This process creates a sense of calm and clarity, and through prolonged practice, can lead to deeper, more meaningful changes in consciousness.
The Positive Effects of Meditation
The benefits of meditation are vast, impacting our physical, mental, and subtle body. Here are just a few positive effects you may begin to notice after a consistent practice:
Enhanced mental clarity and focus
Reduced stress and anxiety
Increased emotional resilience
A deeper connection to self and others
A stronger sense of inner peace and balance
